The Struggle is Real for Mompreneurs
It’s hard to manage your time and energy as a mom.
It’s hard to manage your time and energy as an entrepreneur.
When you’re doing both? The struggle is real. It’s a whole other level.
So, let’s talk about why it’s hard but also how we can change our mindset about it and move forward in a way that protects our energy.
You start with great intentions.
I don’t know about you, but I started with a very romantic idea of how this whole mompreneur thing would work.
I pictured myself sitting at my computer, working on my business while still being a super mom. I would build an empire (and it would come naturally) while still having time to be a field trip Mom and go to every soccer practice.
The reality is that I started my own business to spend more time with my children, but like a horror movie blob monster, my business started creeping into every second of my day. It’s a common story - we stop working 9-5 and instead work 24/7.
You’re only one person.
And it’s not that we always WANT to work every second of every day.
It’s that we don’t realize how much work it is to run a business until you’re in it! We think that we can move from our corporate life into entrepreneurship with the same time commitment. But in your corporate life, you had a marketing department, an accounting department, etc. Now, YOU are all of those departments. You are wearing all the hats, and girl, it’s a lot.
You only have two hands, one brain, and 24 hours in a day.
Plus, this is your passion!
Each of the women I coach is passionate about what they’re doing - and with good reason. We are taking our skills and making a real difference. We are dismantling the status quo and elevating the conversation around what we do.
Of course, you are excited! I’m excited!
So, because we are so excited, we ignore our boundaries and needs. We force ourselves to push past our low energy, discomfort and even pain because we’re so passionate about what we do.
We are terrible bosses to ourselves. Would you want to work for a boss who asks you to do as much as you’re doing?
If you’ve been shaking your head, no, you need to hear this: something needs to change.
But you can manage your boundaries, energy and expectation
So much of the “hustle and grind” culture has become normalized in the entrepreneurial space. And I’m not here for it. So, let’s normalize setting boundaries. Let’s normalize creating businesses that support our best lives without sacrificing the other things that are important to us.
How do we do it?
By learning to listen to our bodies
Our bodies are our best barometers for whether or not we’re stretching ourselves too thin in our businesses. Whether it's a persistent feeling of fatigue, tension headaches, or simply a sense of unease, these signals should not be ignored.
By learning to listen attentively to what our bodies are telling us, we empower ourselves to make informed decisions about how we allocate our time and energy.
By learning how to support our energy needs
It’s one thing to say that we need more energy - it’s another to figure out how to support YOUR energy needs.
One-size-fits-all only works for earrings. With everything else, we are unique, and so the tools and strategies to boost your energy will be unique to you.
So, you need time and space to figure that out and find out what works for you.
By finding the support you need
It is not all on you. Let me repeat it: this is not all on you.
They say it takes a village to raise a child, and it also takes a village to raise a business.
Find a community of other like-minded women because you’ll need mentors and peers to support you.
You also need support from someone who’s been there and done it. Someone who understands how our body works, how we can build and drain our energy and how to find more harmony in your days. That’s me - that’s what I do! And that’s the work we do together in my Energized Mom Method.
